These are the hard lessons we learned this year — and what we got right – CNBC

It’s been a difficult year. Inflation remains a challenge, with the Federal Reserve signaling yet another potential shift in its efforts to tame it. St. Louis Fed President James Bullard said Thursday morning that aggressive central bank interest rate hikes have so far had “only limited effects” on rising prices. Just last week, the market soared on hopes the Fed would instead slow the pace of rate hikes. About a year ago, when inflation fears first started to percolate, we said to own stocks that make things, do stuff at a profit and return some of that extra cash to shareholders in the form of dividends and buybacks. Jim Cramer said during Thursday’s “Monthly Meeting” for November that while it was a good call, it was not a great one because he left out one key detail: Stocks should not be expensive on any traditional metric. First, let’s look at three tough lessons we learned and how we managed through the turmoil. Second, we’ll discuss three investments that were right for this ma...

Here’s how investing in silver stacks up – The Perth Mint – Kitco NEWS

(Kitco News) With sentiment around silver looking up following gold’s November rally, the Australian Perth Mint looked at how investment in the precious metal stacks up. Silver has unreformed gold this year. The precious metal is down 10.6% year-to-date, while gold is down only 3.9%. Gold is starting to make up for a fairly lackluster 2022 after seven months of consecutive losses. And according to many analysts, silver is known to follow gold into rallies. The metal is also famous for outperforming gold during bullish cycles and underperforming gold during bearish cycles. This is why it was not surprising to see the results of last month’s survey from the London Bullion Market Association’s (LBMA) Global Precious Metals Conference. LBMA delegates said they saw silver rising to $28.30 an ounce in the next 12 months – a 36% increase from current levels. They also expected gold to rise to $1,830.50 an ounce in 12 months – a 4% advance from current price levels. “Investing in silver,...

Boring is Beautiful in Investing – A Wealth of Common Sense

Boring is better this year in the markets. The more exciting your portfolio, the worse your performance is in this bear market. Those old stodgy blue chip stocks in the Dow that pay dividends and have stable cash flows are crushing the innovation-led stocks that have more potential than profits in 2022. This is in stark contrast to the FOMO days of 2020 and 2021 when it felt like the only place to put your money was the most intoxicating of investments. French philosopher Blaise Pascal once wrote, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” The investor play on words here would be: “All portfolio problems stem from investor’s inability to stick with a boring old asset allocation.” Successful investing should be boring. It should be long-term in nature. It requires patience and discipline and the ability to ignore the madness of the crowds. But you can’t brag about boring to your friends and co-workers. No one writes glowing profiles a...

Investing: Why to Keep Buying Stocks When the Market Is Down – Money

Seeing red in your investment accounts is scary. But it doesn’t mean you should stop contributing money. In fact, it’s arguably extra important to ignore the urge to sell and keep contributing to your investments when the markets are struggling. The S&P 500 , a benchmark commonly used to measure how U.S. stocks are doing overall, is down around 17% for the year. The index fell into a bear market in June before enjoying a summer rally and then tumbling again in the fall. The past month has been a good for the stock market but still, experts say more volatility is likely as investors contend with the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes , which tend to weigh on the price of financial assets like stocks , bonds and crypto . All that is to say, your investment portfolio has likely seen better days than it has this year. But even when it looks like the balance in your 401(k) , individual retirement account (IRA) or other investment accounts is getting smaller, continuing to cont...
