MarketWatch Picks: Warren Buffett says this is the ‘biggest mistake’ people make with their money (and psst: it has to do with savings)

One clip making the rounds comes from a 1985 interview, when Buffett was asked about the most important quality that an investor can have.

“It’s the temperamental quality, not an intellectual quality. You don’t need tons of IQ in this business … you do not have to be able to play three-dimensional chess,” he said. “You need a stable personality. You need a temperament that neither derives great pleasure from being with the crowd, or against the crowd.

“This is not a business where you take polls; it’s a business where you think,” he added. Watch it below.

Or here’s another famous Buffett line of thinking, which he has said many times over the years: “You don’t have to be right about thousands and thousands and thousands of companies, you only have to be right about a couple.”

Another Buffett chestnut, shared while sitting next to Charlie Munger, his investing partner and vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway: “You can’t make a good deal with a bad person. Just forget it.”

Buffett has also said that he values time over money: “Money has no utility to me. Time has utility to me.”

Speaking of birthday gifts, Buffett plans to give away 99% of his wealth to philanthropic causes. And in 2021, Buffet announced he had already given away $41 billion to the Gates Foundation and four other foundations run by Buffett family members.
