Melissa Howard’s love of shopping meant her wardrobes were full.

But instead of letting her dresses collect dust, she started cashing in with online apparel renting platform The Volte.

“I would estimate I’ve earned about $25,000 to $30,000 using The Volte and hiring my wardrobe,” Howard told Sunrise.

“I’ve been able to put the money towards travelling to places like Hawaii (and) the Greek Islands.

“It’s such a great extra source of income, especially with the rising cost of living at the moment.”

Getting nautical

But it’s not just about clothes.

If you happen to have a spare boat laying around, you can rent that out too.

Book My Boat is like the Airbnb of the marine world, which takes boats from storage to sea.

“On average in Australia, boat owners are only using their boats 28 days of the year, so that means there’s a 96 per cent underutilised asset,” Book My Boat founder Matthew Lloyd said.

“We like to say we turn our boat’s idle days into pay days.”

It’s also good news for those who want to dip a toe in the water and see how the other half live, without the full financial commitment.

Boat owner Jessica Dennis always wanted a vessel but couldn’t justify the expense until now.

“We bought the boat for $60,000, that was in 2019,” Dennis said.

“We are currently at about $100,000 in rentals that we’ve made … and now it’s paying us back which is amazing.”

Driving up an income

If you have a car but have found yourself driving less, there’s a chance for you to cash in too.

Platforms like Car Next Door and Drive My Car allow you to make money by letting others rent your car.

Of course, if you have some time up your sleeve as well, you can try driving for Uber or Didi.

Space for savings

With storage space at a premium these days, you can really cash in if you have some spare space around your place.

From carparks to places to store furniture, platforms like Spacer or even Gumtree, can help you find someone to fill the space and your wallet at the same time.
