Mack Maine on investing in emoji and NFT startup Yat – Fortune

Nearly everyone loves emojis for expressing themselves via text and instant messaging apps. And more recently, some techies are looking to monetize them. Yat , cofounded by entrepreneur Naveen Jain, is the company behind a new type of online identity called “yats,” a unique combination of emojis that act as a custom emoji identity, domain, username, NFT, and collectible, all in one. Yats are touted to give users the ability to own their online identities independently from companies like Meta and Google . A one- to five-character design costs anywhere from $4 to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The shorter and more memorable the combination, the higher the price, typically.  Nearly 160,000 yats have been sold for a combined $20 million since last February when the company launched. The highest price paid for a yat was $425,000 for the single-character key emoji. Similar to the NFT wave earlier this year, Yat is attracting a number of celebrity investors and promoters. Among them

YouTube Premium ‘download videos or music’ feature not working or broken? You’re not alone – PiunikaWeb

Ever since Google acquired YouTube many years ago, the world’s most popular video platform has constantly been receiving new features and changes. Some of YouTube’s most important changes are related to its monetization system. For instance, YouTube has derived additional services such as YouTube TV and YouTube Music. In addition, there is also ‘YouTube Premium’ (formerly ‘YouTube Red’) as a monthly subscription service. This allows paying users of the platform to enjoy videos and music without advertising (and more perks). One of the best YouTube Premium features is the ability to download videos for offline consumption. Premium subscribers can also do the same with music using the YouTube Music app. However, lately the ability to download videos or music has not been working properly for many YouTube Premium users. YouTube Premium ‘download videos’ unavailable for some Some YouTube Premium users are currently unable to download videos to their devices for offline watching. Acc

The U.S. Is Investing Big in Chips. So Is the Rest of the World. – The Wall Street Journal

July 31, 2022 5:30 am ET Listen to article (2 minutes) A mega-spending package to grow U.S. semiconductor production must reckon with a tough reality: The world is already awash in chip-making incentives. What makes the U.S. effort unique is the enormous one-time sum—roughly $77 billion in subsidies and tax credits— earmarked to boost American manufacturing of the ubiquitous tech component. But other countries, especially in Asia, have doled out government dollars and offered favorable regulations for decades. And they plan for more. from Investing – My Blog https://ift.tt/uGp7HVN via IFTTT

Investing in Real Estate as Self-Care – The New York Times

“I felt like I owned myself, like that was a form of self-love to go back and redeem my dream, my path,” Ms. Ealey said. “I went from being heartbroken, lost, confused, and in just one year, I was able to turn that into having about half a million in assets.” During the process, she became active in both the Lady Landlords and Real Estate InvestHER Facebook communities, heartened to meet others like herself. “So many went from being married and in relationships and ended up losing everything, but took the little money they had and put it into real estate,” she said. Their stories alleviated her fears that she’d taken too big a risk. Gender Bias But there are pitfalls, often related to gender bias. One 2020 paper from the Yale School of Management found that single women see much lower returns from buying and selling real estate than single men. The Lady Landlords and Real Estate InvestHER message boards are full of questions and complaints about how to address unequal treatment.

Crossing Guards Are An Effective, Low Tech Solution To Traffic Problems Near Schools – Jamestown Post Journal

<!– SHOW ARTICLE –> Sidewalk plowing is the collaboration between the Jamestown Public Schools and city of Jamestown that is getting the most attention. But after a year in which traffic issues around some city schools — notably Persell Middle School and Love Elementary School — a memorandum of understanding between the city and school district to improve the crossing guard program shouldn’t get lost in the shuffle. Parents know full well how important a good crossing guard can be during drop-off and pick-up times. The program for now is to make sure there is a crossing guard at each of the city’s elementary schools. That’s a good start, but in our opinion having a crossing guard or two outside Persell Middle School makes a lot of sense too, given the school’s location at the intersection of two busy streets. Even middle schoolers who think they’re all grown up would benefit from an adult’s help on Hazeltine Avenue and Baker Street. There will be much talk over the city’s Vi

What does the rest of 2022 hold for climate tech investing? | Greenbiz – GreenBiz

So the first half of 2022 has certainly been — something. From an unprovoked Russian assault on Ukraine to a supply chain crisis to rising inflation to astronomical gas prices to an accelerated rate of natural disasters to the Supreme Court — you know what, I need to stop before my fifth stress ball of the year explodes. 2022 basically saw 2020 and responded with a defiant, “Hold my drink.” And because all these crises are happening at the same time, the venture capital landscape has taken a hit.  But what about startup investing? Specifically, climate tech startup investing? How does that fare in our end of times?  Looking back to look forward In the first half of 2022, climate tech startups raised around $19 billion across 500 venture deals, according to both Powerhouse Ventures , a leading early-stage venture capital (VC) firm, and Climate Tech VC , an online database detailing the intricacies of the present climate investment market. For perspective, a total of $40 billion was i

The vast amount of that advice is about what you should be doing. Very little is about what not to do. A good businessperson understands both the good and the bad about their business. That way there will be fewer mistakes to work through. Here is where you begin: 1. Not thinking outside your home market. It’s easy to become enamored with your hometown market because you are so familiar with it. It is critically important that you fully understand the market you are investing

Frictionless Shopping Is Here. YouTube and Instagram Join TikTok With New Social Commerce Tools – Inc.

If you haven’t brought your retail business into the world of social commerce just yet, consider this your cue. This month, both Instagram and YouTube unveiled new tools that aim to help users make sales directly on their social media platforms –removing the need to shop at a brand’s own website or retailer’s online store. With the more seamless check-out options, presumably consumers will have fewer barriers to buy, and that can lead to more sales.  On Instagram, customers can now place and track orders directly in direct messages, and sellers can request and receive payment in the same thread using Meta Pay . This feature aims to simplify the purchase process, especially for custom orders that might require back-and-forth communication between buyer and seller, according to Meta , the Menlo Park, California-based owner of Instagram and Facebook. Previously, businesses could sell items on Instagram through the app’s shop function, but shoppers could not place orders through di

Investing in Nash – Andreessen Horowitz

We’re excited to announce that a16z is leading the Series A for Nash , an API-based platform for last-mile delivery.  The Nash marketplace gives businesses the “superpower” of being able to offer delivery, without having to build their own fleet or manage logistics. Nash customers get access to a network of hundreds of local and national providers and immediately receive quotes for delivery requests based on price, availability, and vehicle type. Businesses can use Nash to activate same-day (or even same-hour) delivery for their customers.  We first partnered with Nash for their seed round in the fall of 2021, shortly after co-founders Mahmoud Ghulman and Aziz Alghunaim launched the company and graduated from YCombinator. At that time, Nash was primarily serving local businesses — many of whom had been hit hard by the pandemic and wanted to compete with Amazon and other mega-retailers  by also offering delivery.  Since then, Nash has seen what we feel is extraordinary growth in t

Mark Cuban on his $20 million ‘Shark Tank’ strategy: ‘I don’t always invest because I think I’ll make money’ – CNBC

Like everyone, Mark Cuban’s investment history has hits and misses — and, at least when it comes to ABC’s “Shark Tank,” the billionaire has made peace with that fact. On Saturday, Cuban noted on Twitter that “on a cash basis,” he’s taken a net loss on his myriad “Shark Tank” investments — which, by one online estimate, include nearly $20 million invested into 85 startups since joining the show in 2011. “I’m good with that with my ‘Shark Tank’ companies,” Cuban wrote. “I don’t do the show to get the best investments. And I don’t always invest because I think I’ll make money. Sometimes my deals are purely to help someone or send a message.” Notably, Cuban added, the net loss only covers companies that he’s exited — not any of his active investments in private companies. “If I add the valuations [of my current investments] based on the last raise, I’m doing great,” he wrote. “”But that’s not money in my pocket. It’s potential. Raising money hopefully creates more upside. However, [

Main Street And Realty Income: The Dynamic Duo Of Income Investing (NYSE:MAIN) – Seeking Alpha

Baris-Ozer Written by Nick Ackerman. This article was originally published to members of Cash Builder Opportunities on July 10th, 2022. Two names that are almost synonymous with income investing are the dynamic duo Main Street Capital ( NYSE: MAIN ) and Realty Income ( NYSE: O ). Both of these names have provided income investors with steady returns through their monthly dividends. Not only have they been paying regular dividends without missing a beat, but they’ve also been growing these dividends. Growing dividends and income are an important part of investing to help maintain an investor’s purchasing power. While inflation has been almost nonexistent for most of the last decade, we are really starting to see the negative impacts that higher inflation is causing now. If you are already using this income for your retirement expenses, this does the growth in the background. If you are still in the accumulation phase of your life, reinvesting and growing dividends only compounds
